TIME TO GO

THE UNITED NATIONS INSPIRES ME TO IMITATE THE PUNNING ON THE NAME OF BOTTOM, THE WEAVER, IN MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM. THE TRAGEDY OF BOTTOMLESS CONSCIOUSNESS CAN APPLY TO BOTH BOTTOM AND THE U.N. FOR THE 15TH CONSECUTIVE YEAR THE U.N. HAS DENIED ADMISSION TO TAIWAN. IN 1971, TAIWAN WAS EXPELLED IN FAVOR OF CHINA. WHY IS THERE NOT ROOM FOR IT NOW? WHAT HAS THE TINY, INDUSTRIOUS COUNTRY DONE TO DESERVE SUCH DISRESPECT? OR RATHER WHAT CLOUT HAS CHINA THAT WARRANTS THIS INJUSTICE? ARROGANCE AND A NONSENSICAL APPROACH TO REALITY ARE COMMON DENOMINATORS OF BOTH CHARACTERS AT THE BOTTOM - THE U.N. AND THE BUFFOON IN SHAKESPEARE'S PLAY. LET'S CONSIDER THE DIFFERENCE, HOWEVER, IS THE NATURES OF THEIR SPORTS. THE GREAT PLAYWRIGHT SIMPLY ATTEMPTED TO PUN AND PLAY WITH HIS AUDIENCE. THE UNITED NATIONS PLAYS AT A COMPLICATED GAME, RE-CASTING CHARACTERS ON THE WORLD'S STAGE. IT TREATS POLITICS AS A BLOOD SPORT. ALL'S FAIR ONLY IN LOVE AND WAR, NOT AT THE U.N. CAN'T SOMEONE SAY TO IT, "FOR GOD'S SAKE, GO."
