“organized massacre” of self-reliance

When I hear talk of another government program, a similar-sounding word pogrom often comes to mind. Are these two not similar in a perverted way?  What other than an “organized massacre” of self-reliance and independent living is a subsidized do-good effort which eliminates individual freedom?
