Is it any different in peacetime?

War is that merciless revealer of character. When things get tough, those with tough characters get going.  But there’s a problem. What direction does tough character take?  That depends upon the definition of character. The Civil War’s absence of law in some areas resuted in lawlessness marked by theft and murder, inspired the bloody feud between the Hatfields and the McCoys.  World War II’s butchery and suffering inspired great leadership in General Eisenhower,  President F.D.R. and  Saint Maximillian Kolbe. What has resulted from the war on wolves?  The predator was eventually protected as an endangered species and re-introduced into its native habitats.  But now that wolves have exceeded 8000, politicians want to take away their status.  War reveals the character of both men and animals. Nobility unveiled; smallness uncovered. Good vs. bad character. Is it any different in peacetime?  Us vs. them?
