Numbers don’t lie

In 1836, 187 Texans died at the Alamo; 390 died at Goliad both defeats by Mexican Santa Ana. In retaliation, a short time later, at San Jacinto, 630 Mexicans died under Texan Sam Houston. A short time later in 1845, the term ‘manifest destiny’ was coined in a newspaper and further conquest for America was on. Have you ever thought about the ironic similarity between the treatment of Santa Ana who was allowed to live after the battle of San Jacinto by the victor Sam Houston and defeated General Robert E. Lee by Ulysses S. Grant? Had Santa Ana and Lee both been executed, things would have been different in the American story. But American history is messy, sometimes marked by humanity, mostly by cruelty. Fast forward to 2013. The average welfare payment under our government’s food stamp program is over $220 a month per household. We two unsubsidized senior citizens for the same period, do not spent $100. Numbers don’t lie. Any American who says life has not improved over time is a an idiot, a fool or a liberal Democrat.
